Press Release-Barker/Leahy Fires
C#12D-04797: On 09/10/12 at approximately 1100 hrs. Douglas County Deputies were doing safety patrols and delivering fire evacuation notices in the area of Strahl Canyon Rd. near Grand Coulee. They contacted one resident who was a senior citizen living alone and who was having difficulty with mobility and loading her car. The Deputies assisted the woman with packing and loading a few of her possessions. She was able to safely leave the area. Later in the afternoon the evacuation level was reduced and the citizen was able to return to her home. She brought a friend with her to help. While her house had been spared, there were spots of fire burning around the residence. She and her friend had gone outside to try to put out the fires. In the process, the woman fell and injured her leg. Because of the fires there was no phone service or power. There is also no cell service in the area. There were still spots of fire burning near where she had fallen. One of the Deputies had gone back to the house to check on it, and the woman’s friend was able to flag down the patrol car. The Deputy was able to radio for an ambulance and a fire truck to hold back the still burning fires in the nearby brush. The RiverCom radio log shows the Deputy reporting “Need a brush truck. There is still fire in the brush by the patient”. The citizen was rescued and transported to the hospital.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has delivered approximately 36 level II evacuation notices. More are expected this afternoon. This does not include any notices delivered by Coulee Dam area police departments.
