(Cashmere, WA) Sheriff Brian Burnett reports on Monday, July 2nd at about 6:21 AM, Rivercom received a call from Burlington Northern Santa Fe’, reporting a train vs. pedestrian accident.  The original location was described only as under the Wenatchee River Bridge or near the irrigation bridge.  Wenatchee Police assisted in trying to locate the exact location and it was soon determined to be in the Stines Hill area just west of Cashmere.

Deputies responding to the area observed an Amtrak passenger train stopped on the bridge spanning the Wenatchee Riveron the west end of Stines Hill and arrived to confirm this was in fact the location of the incident.  Investigators stated in speaking to the conductor of the train, he reported rounding a corner, which appeared less than a quarter mile prior to the collision at approximately 40 mph, and seeing a male subject walk onto the center of tracks, but away from the train.  The conductor immediately sounded the train horn and when the male subject failed to get off the tracks, he activated the emergency stopping procedures.  The conductor stated the male subject looked back at the train at least a couple times prior to being struck.  The male has been positively identified as a 71 year old Cashmere man, but his name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The reason for the man to be on the tracks is still under investigation.  The Amtrak train was released at about 8:00 A.M.
