(Rock Island, WA) On September 7th at approximately 9:30 AM RiverCom dispatch received a report of a structure fire at the 10 Blk. of N. Garden in Rock Island. A Douglas County Deputy arrived at 9:40 and found the detached garage of the residence engulfed in flames. He ran to the nearby house which was approximately 20 feet from the garage. He entered the residence to see if anyone was inside, but it was empty.
The first fire unit arrived at 9:44 AM and began fighting the fire. Responders observed there was a small pickup parked inside the garage. A tow truck arrived and was able to pull the pickup out of the garage which was still smoldering and beginning to collapse. A body was found inside the pickup.
The case is being investigated by a fire officials and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The fire was very intense, and at this time there, is no conclusive information as to the identity of the person found in the pickup. The body was transported to Central Washington Hospital pending an autopsy. Deputies are still on scene as of 1:23 PM supporting the firefighters and continuing their investigation.
