Francis E. Whitinger, 103, a 2 year East Wenatchee resident, passed away at Avalon Adult Family Home on Sunday, September 30, 2012.
Born on September 3, 1909 to Albert and Nettie (Taylor) Whitinger in Ames, Iowa and raised in Brewster on the family orchard along with his siblings and attending school and graduating from Brewster High School in 1927. After graduating Francis become a catskinner and fought fires in California. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army and served during WWII in the Philippines and Japan. Returning to Brewster following his discharge from the Army he married Mabel Winslow a year later on September 7, 1947. Together they made their home in Cashmere until 1961 and then to Wenatchee. He worked on the highway crew for the Washington State Department of Transportation until he retired in 1972 after 25 years.
Never having children of their own and if you were lucky enough to be a kid around Francis and Mabel they considered you to be one of their own. In the winters you would find these two “snowbirds” traveling to Quartzite, AZ. Mabel passed away in August 2009, after celebrating 60 years together. Francis was a member of the FOE for over thirty years. Francis was kind hearted, optimistic and always saw the BEST in everyone.
Francis is survived by nephews, Donald Whitinger, East Wenatchee, Gary Whitinger, Lynwood, WA; great nephews, Gerry Whitinger, Lake Stevens, WA, Rod Whitinger, Omak and great niece, Vickie Nostrant, Post Falls, ID.
He is preceded in death by his wife, three brothers and half sister.
A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2012, 1:30pm at Heritage Memorial Chapel, East Wenatchee with burial on Monday, October 8, 2012 at Cashmere Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Memorial Chapel, East Wenatchee, WA.
