July 6, 2012

(Wenatchee, WA) Overnight, fire activity was very minimal on the 250-acre Navarre Fire located in the Navarre Coulee area, approximately 8 miles north of the town of Entiat.  Evacuations, road closures and restrictions on boat access near the helicopter dipping site on the Columbia River remain in effect.  The fire is estimated to be 40 percent contained.

A Type 3 Incident Management Team, led by Incident Commander Tony Gilmer, took over fire suppression activities early this morning.  Approximately 120 personnel from state, county, and federal agencies plus contract fire crews are now assigned to the fire.  The incident command post has been set up at Chelan High School.

No structures have burned and one minor injury occurred overnight (a rolling rock struck a firefighters knee).

Hazards to firefighters include steep hillsides, rolling rocks and the potential for high temperatures this afternoon.  Public safety and highway traffic impacts are major concerns.  Motorists can expect to encounter temporary road closures on US Highway 97A when helicopters dip water from the Columbia River.  Navarre Coulee Road remains closed.

Firefighters hope to have a fireline built around the fire by noon on Saturday, July 7.

Current Evacuation Information:

  • One residence in the Johnson Creek area, a mile west of the fire, is under a Level 3 evacuation notice and has been evacuated.
  • Thirteen other residences and cabins in the Johnson Creek area are under a Level 2 evacuation order, which means that residents must be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.
  • Nineteen other residences along Navarre Coulee Road have been warned that a fire is in the area and should monitor local media outlets for information.  No structures have burned.
  • Evacuation level status will be re-evaluated throughout the day

Resources assigned to the fire:

  • Five fire engines from Washington State Department of Natural Resources Northwest Region
  • Two DNR helicopters from Ellensburg
  • Three 20-person contract crews (two from Ellensburg and Yakima areas, and one from Okanogan)
  • One DNR Highland 20-person crew from Northeast Washington
  • One bull dozer from Entiat and one from Ellensburg
  • One water tender from Entiat Fire District 8
  • Miscellaneous overhead personnel from throughout the state
