June 11, 2012

(East Wenatchee, WA) Officials from East Wenatchee, Wenatchee, and Chelan and Douglas counties will meet with the Washington State Transportation Commission in June. As part of its statewide outreach, the commission will hear from area representatives about local and regional transportation challenges and priorities. The commission is also expected to take action on the proposed name for the new ferry that will replace the Keller Ferry.

The meeting will take place at the East Wenatchee City Hall, 271 9th Street N.E., starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 19. The meeting is open to the public and persons wishing to speak to the commission may do so during the public comment period scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

The agenda features a series of short presentations and discussions about current successes and challenges, future plans and needs for transportation in Douglas and Chelan counties, including roads, rail, public transportation and trails. The meeting will include a panel discussion focused on local funding challenges and a discussion of the regional transportation vision. Another session will address the role of Pangborn Field in regional economic development.

Washington State Department of Transportation officials will present to the commission a suggested name for the new ferry being built to serve State Route 21 across the Columbia River. The Keller Ferry route, currently served by the 64-year old Martha S., has been operated by WSDOT since 1931 and connects Lincoln and Ferry counties. WSDOT collected name suggestions from the public, which were then reviewed by a naming committee made up of tribal, community and state representatives. The commission is scheduled to take action on this name request at 3:30 p.m.

The Washington State Transportation Commission holds several meetings throughout the state each year to gain insight from local government, industry and citizens about transportation issues that affect their communities and region. This information helps the commission to develop and implement transportation policies and recommendations that reflect the priorities of the people and local governments of the State of Washington. The commission also will be meeting in Pasco and Tacoma during 2012.
