(Lake Wenatchee, WA) Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett reports two teen male hikers were located by search and rescue deputies on the south side of Dirty Face Mountain Sunday evening when they accidently traveled off trail after making their way to the top of the Dirty Face Trail near Lake Wenatchee.

Both teenagers (a 15 and 16 year old) were from Bothell and had begun their hike at 8:35am Sunday morning from the trailhead located off of the Lake Wenatchee Highway.  They hiked the main trail to the top of the mountain by noon, but mistakenly took a route toward the west as they began descending the area.  Parents of one of the teenagers notified Sheriff’s Office SAR deputies at 4:20pm that they had phone contact with their son who informed them that he and his friend could not find their way back to the main trail and were “bush whacking” their way down the hillside.

Deputies responded to the trailhead where they were assisted by family members who began hiking up the trail.  Deputies had the 15 year old call 9-1-1 so the phone coordinates could be plotted by RIVERCOM dispatch.  It was determined the teens were about half way down the mountain, but well west of the Dirty Face trail.

A deputy hiked about 3 miles up the trail as several phone calls were placed to the subjects attempting to direct them back toward the trail.  At 7:56pm, the deputy on the trail met up with the two teens and escorted them down to the trailhead.  Both subjects had expended all of their water and food supplies and had not been prepared to spend the night in the forest.  Neither subject required medical attention.  They were reunited with family members.
